Water Tanks (Rainwater Tanks)

People often think that Water Tanks are only used in the rural areas of Australia where they are a necessity. At one stage authorities were opposing urban water tanks in Australia. Now they are encouraging the general population to install water tanks by offering government rebates in some states.

With our limited water resources, Rainwater Tanks make a valuable asset for your home, to store rainwater that runs off catchment areas, such as your roof. Australian households use about 280,000 litres of water per year; about half this amount is used to water the garden, and flush toilets. Water tanks are an effective way of storing rainwater, which can provide a valuable water source for:

  • Flushing toilets
  • Washing machines
  • Watering gardens
  • Washing your car

Rainwater tanks come in a range of sizes, shapes, materials and colours. You can install your water tank next to your house, onto or under it.

Water Tank top Cover
All water tanks should have a tight-fitting cover, through which animals and children cant get access. The advantage of having a cover is that water doesn't get lost through evaporation and light, which contributes to the growth of algae, cant not enter the tank.

Water Tank Size
The size and tank capacity depends on what you are going to use it for. Your water authority should be able to help you work out what size you need from the annual rainfall in your region.

Sydney water does recommend a minimum tank size of 5000L for an urban environment, and that you use your water tank for your washing machine, toilet and garden. A 2000L tank is a good size if you would like to connect it to your toilet.

Water Tank Type
Water Tanks come in many shapes and sizes, such as round, rectangular (modular) and slimline.

Water Tanks come in the following materials
  • Reinforced concrete tanks can be bought ready-made or custom-made on-site.
  • Polyethylene (poly) tanks are durable, as rust isn't an issue for people living near the ocean.
  • Fibreglass tanks are more expensive, but they are rust and chemical resistant. They are also designed to withstand extreme temperatures.
  • Metal Tanks are often made from corrugated or flat rolled metal and can be galvanised or coated. They often come with a plastic inner lining (Aquaplate) that will increase the life of the tank and protect the water quality.
